AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT)

AIT is Austria’s largest extra-university research centre in applied research and development. AIT cooperates nationally and internationally with universities and other institutions of higher education or research. Austria's most important enterprises are partners or shareholders of AIT. AIT is represented in this consortium by the AIT group “Biomedical Systems” in the department Health & Environment. The department has been involved in R&D on assistive and ambient assistive living technologies as well as medical research since 1994. The AIT division Biomedical Systems performs R&D in the fields of AAL and smart biomedical systems.

University of Geneva (UniGe)

The University of Geneva participates in the project with the Institute of Service Sciences (ISS) ( of the Economics and Social Sciences Faculty. As a team of 40 staff members, ISS is active in research, technology watch, creativity and teaching. It currently participating in more than 15 research projects (EU/Cost/National Swiss funding) in service domains ranging from services innovation and large-scale services to services for seniors and mobile users and from Personality and Emotion Models to 3D serious games. Our strong involvement in interdisciplinary think groups places us at the forefront of the technology watch in Services Science in Switzerland. The Institute’s international network includes many academic institutions, public administrations, creativity and innovation consultants, think tanks and services providers across Europe, Asia, North America. ISS consists of several labs that will be contributing to this project, including MIRALab (, a well-established lab in Interactive Virtual Human.

University of Cyprus (UCY)

The Department of Computer Science will be the main representative of UCY in Miraculous Life Project. The Department is composed of more than 30 staff members and is active in research, technology watch, creativity and teaching. It has extensive experience in carrying out research and related implementation in the areas of data management, mobile/pervasive computing, service engineering and mobile wireless solutions and services in the health and care sector. Another important area our lab is focusing is the development of ICT-enabled Creativity and Enhanced Learning Environments, platforms and collaboration tools for implementing Health monitoring and support services, Context-aware, Smart and Personalised services for Elders and Assistive Technologies for people with disabilities. The Department has been actively participating in a number of EU and National funded projects in service domains ranging from data management in sensor networks, to context awareness, to smart homes, cognitive personalization, and innovative personalized services for mobile users and elders.


Orbis Medisch en Zorgconcem is a chain organisation for cure, care, residential facilities and services in the Netherlands. It consists out of Orbis Medical Centre, ten nursing and convalescent homes, eight care support centres, a large-scale home care organisation, and a mental health organisation. Orbis has a wide range of care activities and therefore makes it one of the largest employers in the south of the province of Limburg, The Netherlands, with a staff of 5700 and a turnover of 310 M€ in 2011. Orbis has developed an innovative integrated elderly living village concept, Parc Hoogveld, in which housing, wellness, care, and services all go hand-in-hand. It includes a multifunctional centre as well as an assisted living complex and several modern apartment complexes where the elders live independent. Hoogveld has been achieved as best practice in solving the demographic change challenge at a European and international level and different regions and countries have been in contact with Orbis for transfer of knowledge of the establishment of such a setup. Together with other healthcare institutions, clients and third parties, Orbis intends to extend its platforms, promoting sustainable cure, care and living (homecare) in the Netherlands. Moreover, Orbishas a long term expertise in participating in national and international research oriented projects and has been collaborating with a number of academic and industrial organizations.

Orbis Medisch and Zorgconcern had a merger with Atrium Medisch Centrum Parkstad (another hospital in our region). Orbis is proud to reveal her new name per 1-7-2015: Zuyderland. Together Zuyderland guarantees excellent cure and care in the south of the Netherlands. Zuyderland has now one hospital at multiple locations, 10 care centers, two hospices, rehabilitation, mental healthcare, home care, domestic care and youth health care. Orbis Thuiszorg (home care) and Orbis Huishoudelijke hulp (domestic care) are also in this merger but will keep their name till 1-1-2016. Zuyderland provides high quality cure and care from birth till the end of the life cycle. This merger between Atrium and Orbis is a reinforcement of the cure and care in our region. Now and in the future. Zuyderland finds knowledge transfer, investment in further expertise development and hypermodern medical equipment very important and likes to be a precursor of innovations in cure and care. Due to this merger Zuyderland can reach a bigger patient/client population for our project and have a bigger catchment area to implement the solutions from this project within our own organization. Zuyderland is proud to have these extended possibilities available for the project.

Fraunhofer IGD (Fh-IGD)

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. With more than 80 research units at different locations in Germany and a majority of our 18,000 staff being qualified scientists and engineers we gather an annual research budget totalling €1.65 billion. Fraunhofer IGD as one of the above 80 units is the world's leading institute for applied research in the field of visual computing - image- and model-based IT, computer graphics, computer vision, and virtual and augmented reality. Apart from its headquarters in Darmstadt, Fraunhofer IGD has locations in Rostock, Graz and Singapore. Currently, it has about 180 employees and a budget of 15 million Euros. See for more info.

Noldus Information Technology BV (Noldus)

Noldus Information Technology BV ( develops software tools and integrated measurement systems for the study of human behaviour, emotion and human-system interaction. Areas of expertise include digital video and multimedia, computer vision, sensor technology, signal processing, electronics, and software application development. The products range from data collection and analysis software to complete behavioural research facilities. The company currently employs 125 people, of whom 35 in Research & Development, and operates from offices in The Netherlands (headquarters in Wageningen), Germany, France, Spain, Hungary, USA and China. Noldus’ product, The Observer® has an estimated number of 20,000 users worldwide.

Citard Ltd. (Citard)

Citard Ltd is an SME established in 2005 having its main focus in the implementation of advanced technologies in the areas of elderly care provision and eHealth. The company has long term expertise in the analysis of end users needs and requirements specification and also in the design and development of ICT solutions and services in the health and social care sector. Main company products include the MELCO product providing an elderly social care network for collaboration between the elder and formal and informal carers and also the DITIS product providing for virtual care team support of chronic ill people at home and since 2006 in use in the market. The introduction of DITIS in the Cyprus Cancer Organization has resulted in 2008 in a reduction of 40% of needed care resources cost and an 80% improvement of the quality of cancer patients, at a latest stage and residing at home.

Zoobe message entertainment GmbH (Zoobe)

The Zoobe message entertainment GmbH has been founded in 2008 on the idea to develop technology for multi-media entertainment and communication services based on customizable expressive talking avatars. The team combines cutting-edge skills in software design and engineering, speech technology and computer graphics. CEO of Zoobe is Lenard F. Krawinkel, a leading pioneer of the European computer animation movie community. Members of the Research & Development and the Content Production teams are among others Dr. Sascha Fagel, a speech scientist specialized in multimodal speech and emotions, awarded by the Christian Benoît Association for a project on talking heads for the elderly, a specialist in user experience and user interface design; experts in communication design and software engineering, especially in the fields of computer graphics and speech processing; senior 3D artists. Zoobe has launched several entertainment and communication products that are based on the core technology and is constantly enhancing their quality and developing more features. Although Zoobe’s core technology is in principle appropriate for applications in the area of Ambient Assisted Living, special features and new avatars need to be developed to meet the elder users’ needs and to represent the services adequately. Zoobe has successfully applied and carried out national and international research projects.

La Maison de Retraite du Petit-Saconnex (MRPS)

MRPS in Geneva is a public institution founded in 1849. It is the oldest and largest elderly care institution in the canton of Geneva. It is composed of a high quality nursing home for the elderly housing 196 residents and specialized residences for the elderly supporting them to their independent and semiindependent needs, hosting 220 residents. MRPS is the only institution in the Geneva canton offering to its residents the possibility to preserve their life style in spite their advanced age, facilitating at the same time their transition to a retirement house. MRPS has been working with the academia and industry in different research oriented projects in improving the elder care processes through ICT based services and technologies.
